Istanbul has different areas, each with its own speciality atmosphere. If you want history, you've got it, with ruins and museums galore. You can even travel underground, through one of the cisterns, by boat - quite an experience!
With so much culture here, Turkey is on display to the world, with its rugs and rich coloured fabrics to view or buy. New art galleries fit in well here, and contrast with the ancient to good effect.
If you are a night owl, there are plenty of bars and nightclubs to try.
If you prefer something a bit calmer, there are spas and Turkish baths, as you would expect.
Food and drink is very cosmopolitan, but the traditional cuisine is widely available throughout the city.
